On the day of their anniversary, workaholic and real estate agent Jim Evers and his wife Sara receive a strange phone call from a man called Ramsley. He requests that Sara come to the mysterious Gracey Manor. Jim decides to turn it into an opportunity to check out a possible gold-mine in real estate, but to please Sara, he claims it is a "family trip", bringing the kids along. Once there, Ramsley the butler insists that they stay, for a big storm is on the way. The Evers are introduced to Master Gracey, who seems strangely obsessed with Sara. Jim goes off to talk to Gracey about selling, but ends up in a secret passage instead. The kids follow a floating ball to the attic, where they see a painting of a woman who looks just like Sara! Jim and the kids eventually discover the mansion's dark secret from Madame Leota, a talking head in a crystal ball. She tells them that Sara is in danger and to save her, they must "lead the ghosts to the light." After some spooky adventures and surprises, the family manages to save the manor and Sara, all while learning a valuable lesson about togetherness.

Movie Quote(s):
- Madame Leota: Dark spirits from the grave come forth. Lift us from the black. And show us, show us the way back. Jim: Dark spirits? Hey, no dark spirits! Don't you make no dark spirits come out!
-
Jim: Hey, honey, you know they have dead people in the backyard. Sara Evers: Well, some people have swimming pools, others have private cemeteries. It can happen.
-
[about to go over a steep hill] Jim: Hold on! Madame Leota: With what?
-
[Jim, Megan and Michael, are in the carriage riding past all the ghosts in the graveyard] Michael: Dad? Jim: Yeah, son? Michael: I see dead people.
-
[last lines] Madame Leota: Angels in Heaven, together at last. The tale is well ended for those who have passed. Love endures all, no reason, no rhyme. It lasts forever and forever all the time. Megan: Mom, Leota won't shut up. Michael: Are we there yet? Megan: I'm getting pretty hungry. Michael: Can we stop for some pizza? Jim: Hey, how long before we get there, Sara? Sara Evers: Twenty minutes, tops. Jim: Nothing takes twenty minutes.
Movie Trivia:
- The Disney theme-park ride's theme song, "Grim Grinning Ghosts", makes a short appearance in the movie, but the all of the background music is some version of the song. Thurl Ravenscroft is the soloist for this song on the Disney ride, but he wasn't able to sing for the movie version of the song.
-
Madame Leota, the medium whose head is enclosed in her crystal ball, was named for Imagineer Leota Thomas, who worked on numerous Disneyland projects in the 1960s.
-
The red couch in Gracey's study was used in 20000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954).
-
Originally, Don Knotts was cast as the Groundskeeper seen at the entrance to the cemetery in the ride. While the character was cut as the script developed, both the Groundskeeper and his faithful, fearful dog can be glimpsed among the ghosts populating the cemetery in the film.
-
Several references to the Disney theme-park ride include: - the singing busts - the breathing door (even the doorknob is the same) - Madame Leota (and the spectral instruments) - the busts that follow Jim - the ghostly carriage (a prop outside the ride) - the old man and the dog in the cemetery - Master Gracy's hanging - the ghostly ballroom dancers. - the Raven seen throughout the movie - the hitchhiking ghosts - the hangman - the eyes in some of the walls - morphing pictures in the hallway. - several lines throughout the movie that are also used in the ride's narration, such as: "Welcome, foolish mortals", "Final arrangements have been made", "There's always my way" - the floating candelabra in the credits - the bride's dress in the attic - the screeching cat sound effect in graveyard scene - the skeleton's hands that start to open coffin in the mausoleum - the knights in the hallway attacking Jim - the door knockers heard rapping in the bedroom hallway - the pipe-organ in the ballroom - the clock strikes 13 during the prologue
