With Argento's trademark visual style, linked with one of his more coherent plots, Tenebrae follows a writer who arrives to Rome only to find somebody is using his novels as the inspiration (and, occasionally, the means) of committing murder. As the death toll mounts the police are ever baffled, and the writer becomes more closely linked to the case than is comfortable.

Movie Quote(s):
- Peter Neal: I've been charged, I've tried building a plot the same way you have. I've tried to figure it out; but, I just have this hunch that something is missing, a tiny piece of the jigsaw. Somebody who should be dead is alive, or somebody who should be alive is already dead. Detective Germani: Explain that. Peter Neal: You know, there's a sentence in a Conan Doyle book, "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."
-
Peter Neal: Let me ask you something? If someone is killed with a Smith&Wesson revolver... Do you go and interview the president of Smith & Wesson?
-
[First lines] Narrator: "The impulse had become irresistible. There was only one answer to the fury that tortured him. And so he committed his first act of murder. He had broken the most deep-rooted taboo, and found not guilt, not anxiety or fear, but freedom. Any humiliation which stood in his way could be swept aside by the simple act of annihilation: Murder."

Movie Trivia:
- The background "muzak" theme playing in the department store at the beginning of the film is taken from the soundtrack of the European version of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978) (which was edited and re-scored under Dario Argento's supervision).
-
Reportedly inspired after director Dario Argento was stalked by a fan.
-
A "George Kemp" is credited as sole screenwriter on U.S. posters and as co-screenwriter with Argento on some prints of the film.
-
Christopher Walken was considered for the lead role.
-
In Germany, the film is still banned after 25 years of its release. The film has never been released uncut in Germany and according to the FSK (the official censorship in Germany), it never will.
