A shuffling, evil marine biologist/janitor who speaks only in voice-overs develops a process to turn people into super-powerful amphibious sea creatures. Once he transforms himself, however, he seems to lose focus, as he starts Windexing a nearby pond. Only later does he vaguely start chasing after nubile women so that he can transform them as well, mate, and produce a race of super beings which will RULE THE WORLD!!

More Movie Taglines:
- Hydra will rip at your senses and plunge you into a quagmire of revulsion...
- Is the monster man... fish... or devil?
- It would take an atom bomb to wipe out the walking catfish!
- A creature like you've never seen before.
Movie Quote(s):
- [on being told that a victim may have been killed by a "fish bite"] INPIT Agent Stevens: It looks more like it was done by an animal; a cat or an ape.
-
Dr. Leopold: The formula they all laughed at - Z sub A, A sub T... ZaAt!
-
[the newly transformed Leopold sees his new face in the mirror] Dr. Leopold: Nothing at all like the catfish... but it's BEAUTIFUL!
-
Sheriff Krantz: Hah! The state of Florida against a l'il ole catfish. Some case!
-
Sheriff Krantz: Well, I ain't seen that college education of yours do us much good so far. Marine Biologist Rex: Walking fish wasn't part of the curriculum. They didn't teach us how to be kind to sheriffs, either - but I'm trying. Sheriff Krantz: You better be, boy.
Movie Trivia:
- This was the only movie that the cast appeared in (excluding Paul Galloway, who appeared in J.D.'s Revenge (1976), and one of the bit players, who appeared in Silent Night, Deadly Night III: Better Watch Out! (1989) (V)), and the only movie for most of the crew as well.
-
Filming the movie's monster was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek affair. For shots that wouldn't show the monsters feet, Wade Popwell, the actor in the monster suit, would usually be wearing shoes. So unless we're seeing the monsters feet in a shot - it would typically be wearing tennis shoes on location.
-
In an interview, writer Ron Kivett stated that the inspiration for the movie came from an article he read about a species of 'walking' catfish that could live both in water and on land. The article theorized that the fish were possibly a mutation, and Kivett thought it was an intriguing idea for a story. Doctor Leopold refers to the same species of fish in his endless voice-over narrative in the movie.
-
The movie was shot in 1971 and had a limited release in the American South that year, but it would be nearly four years before it saw any wide release.
-
Originally the film was suppose to have scenes of gigantic catfish destroying the countryside but footage of the walking catfish on miniature landscapes proved to be too hokey. However one shot still made it into the film as one catfish can be seen squirming next to a miniature fence during one sequence.
