During World War II, the government was trying to develop a way to render their naval vessels undetectable to radar. When the scientists in charge of it think they have done it, they try it out on one of the ships in the Philadelphia harbor. When they turn it on, the ship disappears. Two of the ship's sailors find themselves in 1984. While they try to find out what's going on. The scientist who developed the technology in 1943, is now involved with a project that somehow brought the two sailors to 1984. And it seems that a black hole has emerged and he thinks the sailors can help. So he tries to get them.

Movie Trivia:
- According to "The Making of The Philadelphia Experiment", the Wendover, Utah air base used in the film's climactic fire sequence was where the Enola Gay was outfitted for its historic flight in 1945.
-
The movie is set in Philadelphia. However, the ships used were at Patriots Point, Charleston South Carolina. The aircraft carrier, destroyer, and submarine are docked in the same positions as the movie.
-
Back in 1980, AVCO Embassay Pictures asked John Carpenter, who serves as an executive producer on this film to both write and direct this film after the success of Halloween (1978) and The Fog (1980). However, Carpenter showed them Escape from New York (1981) (which he wrote years earlier) and they did that instead.
-
This film is widely believed to be based on a real-life and ill-fated experiment with invisibility and force fields in the 1940s. However, to the best of any factual knowledge, no such experiment ever occurred and the story was the work of an eccentric loner, Carl Allen, who sent notes on the "experiment" to the government in the 1950s and whose story was later leaked. Despite the lack of any factual evidence, the story has become an urban legend and favorite of conspiracy theorists, who point to the lack of evidence as proof that it's being covered up.
