As now-Senator Padme Amidala returns to Coruscant to vote on an important Senatorial matter, an assassination attempt on her life prompts the Jedi Council to send Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan Anakin Skywalker to protect her and find out who the assassin is. As this is happening, a rogue Jedi named Count Dooku leads separatists on Geonosis to rebel against the Senate. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine moves for a vote for a Republic Army to protect the Republic, as there has not been a full-scale war since the formation of the Republic. As Obi-Wan's investigations lead him to Kamino, he finds a massive clone army being produced, with a bounty hunter - the last of the Mandalorians - named Jango Fett as the master clone. As he chases the elusive bounty hunter, Jango (and his cloned son Boba) leads Obi Wan to Geonosis, where he meets Count Dooku and finds a startling revelation about the former Jedi. As Anakin is left behind to protect Padme, his feelings for her grow into something more than friendship. From Naboo to Tatooine, it grows into love for her. But when a tragedy strikes Anakin's life, he begins slipping away from the Light Side of the Force, and perhaps from the Force itself.

Movie Quote(s):
- Padme: You're not all-powerful, Ani. Anakin: Well, I should be.
-
Obi-Wan: Your clones are very impressive. You must be very proud.
-
Jango Fett: I'm just a simple man, trying to make my way in the universe.
-
Jango Fett: Do you like your army? Obi-Wan: I look forward to seeing them in action. Jango Fett: They'll do their job well. I'll guarantee that.
-
Jango Fett: Always a pleasure to meet a Jedi.
Movie Trivia:
- Actors auditioning for the part of Anakin included Ryan Phillippe, Paul Walker, and Colin Hanks. In the end Hayden Christensen got the part, primarily because he and Natalie Portman "looked good together".
-
Australian actress Claudia Karvan was cast as Amidala's (Natalie Portman) sister and shot a scene involving the whole family, but the scene was cut. It is included as an extra feature on the DVD.
-
Like Ewan McGregor did in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), Hayden Christensen made "lightsaber noises" the first time he was handed one in rehearsal. After chuckling at the young star's antics, George Lucas informed him that they probably had people in Sound Effects who could do a better job in post production.
-
The Tatooine garage in which Luke cleaned the droids in Star Wars (1977) was rebuilt for this movie, but not completely: while the foreground and background were complete sets in the original film, only the foreground was rebuilt for Episode II; the background is digital.
-
This was the first film to have an "on-location" film shown once a week to document the shooting process. After the success of this feature, other films adopted the same process.
