When brother and sister Roderick and Pamela Fitzgerald stumble across a vacant old house on the west of England, they know they have to buy it. They're forewarned by the owner, Commander Beech, that there have been strange occurrences there but they go ahead anyway. The house had once belonged to Beech's daughter, Mary Meredith, who committed suicide by jumping off the nearby cliff and his granddaughter Stella Meredith, now a young woman, lived there until she was 3 years old. Roderick and Pamela pay no mind to the rumors and tall tales but soon find that there are spirits in the house. They become convinced that the spirit is that of Beech's daughter but it is clear that the target of her venom is her own daughter Stella. Beech is convinced that his granddaughter is in danger in that house and seeks the assistance of the family's one-time nurse, Miss Holloway. She too however, seems to have her own secrets. With the assistance of the local doctor, Dr. Scott, they unearth the truth of what happened all those years ago.

Movie Quote(s):
- Pamela Fitzgerald: Important decisions have to be made quickly.
-
Pamela Fitzgerald: That's the dawn breeze...
-
Roderick Fitzgerald: [narration] They call them the haunted shores, these stretches of Devonshire and Cornwall and Ireland which rear up against the westward ocean. Mists gather here... and sea fog... and eerie stories...
-
Stella Meredith: [realizing Rick has written the music he is playing] You made that up? Roderick Fitzgerald: Yes. Stella Meredith: But you must be brilliant. Roderick Fitzgerald: Oh, dazzling. People have to wear sunglasses.

Roderick Fitzgerald: [narration] They call them the haunted shores, these stretches of Devonshire and Cornwall and Ireland which rear up against the westward ocean. Mists gather here... and sea fog... and eerie stories... Roderick Fitzgerald: That's not because there are most ghosts here then other places, mind you. It's just that people who live here about are strangely aware of them. You see, day and night, year in, year out, they listen to the pound and stir of the waves. There's life and death in that restless sound. And eternity too. Roderick Fitzgerald: If you listen to it long enough, all your senses are sharpened. You come by strange instincts. You get to recognize a peculiar cold that is the first warning. A cold which is no mere matter of degrees Farenheit, but a draining of warmth from the vital centers of the living. Roderick Fitzgerald: Loads of people tell me they would've felt it. Even outside that locked door. We didn't. They can't understand why we didn't know what it meant when our dog wouldn't go up those stairs. Animals see the blasted things that appears. Roderick Fitzgerald: Well, my sister Pamela and I knew nothing about such matters. Not then we didn't. We had the disadvantage of being Londoners, just down for a fortnights rest. That 10th day of May, 1937 was the end of our holiday.
Movie Trivia:
- Three cast members in studio records/casting call lists did not appear or were not identifiable in the movie. These were (with their character names): Norman Ainsley (Chauffeur), Ottola Nesmith (Mrs. Carlton) and George Kirby (Gas Station Attendant). Ainsley presumably was driving the car which dropped off Commander Beech and Stella after church, and Mr. and Mr. Carlton presumably was in the back seat. But none of these actors are seen. Mr. Carlton, however, does speak before the car drives off.
-
Elizabeth Russell posed for Mary Meredith's face in her painting, while Lynda Grey for posed for her body.
-
The onscreen credits list Gail Russell as being 'introduced' in this film, but she actually made her screen debut a year earlier in Henry Aldrich Gets Glamour (1943).
-
Some of the interior sets of Windwood Manor, such as the main staircase and parlor, were re-dressed sets from the 1942 film I Married a Witch (1942).
-
The beautiful song "Stella By Starlight" was written specifically for this movie and is featured several times. In the movie Roderick Fitzgerald "writes" it for Stella Meredith.
