In the 1820s, in Indian, the British East India Company territory is menaced by the unexplained disappearance of thousands of travelers each year. Captain Lewis, a company officer, unearths a fantastic religious cult - Thuggees - who worship Kali, Goddess of destruction; they murder their victims with a silk cloth, rob them and intern the bodies in mass graves. This is real! This actually happened! Murder Cult Terror In Exotic Asia In Strangloscope! Movie Trivia: Some authors have alleged the Guy Rolfe role at first was earmarked for Peter Cushing. Some authors have alleged that Christopher Lee was going to play the George Pastell part. All scenes shot in the marketplace/village were shot at Bray Studios on the revamped set that was constructed for Dracula (1958). Once this film ("Stranglers") was completed in 1959, the set was completely torn down. The sequences where 'Guy Rolfe''s character goes to meet Allan Cuthbertson's character, the capture of two of the thuggees in the process, and the caravan sequences were shot at the sand and gravel quarry in Gerrard's Cross, Buckinghamshire (England). The tiger hunt and the scene where Rolfe's character finds more grave sites was filmed at the Callow Hill Sandpits in Virginia Water, Egham in Surrey.
