Returning back to London after his wife and daughter were been stolen by Judge Turpin, Benjamin Barker adopts the name Sweeney Todd and relocates his barber business to the top of Mrs. Lovett's pie shop. Todd wants his revenge on the man who has now adopted his daughter and works with Mrs. Lovett on an evil plan. Todd will slice the throats of the unsuspecting public while giving them a shave. These bodies are then turned into Mrs. Lovett's new meat pies. With this plan being successful, all Todd needs to do now is try to convince the Judge to sit in his chair.

This is the sixth Johnny Depp-Tim Burton collaboration. They previously made Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and Corpse Bride (2005) together.

Helena Bonham Carter underwent extensive vocal lessons and studied baking in preparation for her role.

Anne Hathaway was almost cast as Johanna but Tim Burton wanted a complete unknown for the role and settled with Jayne Wisener. Meryl Streep, Imelda Staunton, Cyndi Lauper and Emma Thompson were all considered for the role of Mrs. Lovett. Annette Bening and Toni Collette both also lobbied vigorously for the role of Mrs. Lovett, but lost out to Helena Bonham Carter.

During its first month of production in London, Johnny Depp had to take a ten-day leave of absence when his daughter, Lily-Rose, was rushed to a hospital due to a severe illness (which was never disclosed by the media). To accommodate his absenteeism, director Tim Burton filmed scenes that didn't feature Depp's character.
