An attack on a secret off-world base by a rebel organization has stranded the remaining survivors on an Ancient ship "Destiny", a large unmanned ship launched millions of years ago. At the far end of the universe, Colonel Everett Young and Dr. Nicolas Rush now lead the new "Destiny" crew on a journey to discovering new worlds as well as encountering new alien creatures, in hope of finding a way back home. Morals are tested and tensions rise when Colonel Young's leadership is questioned all while Dr. Rush sacrifices the safety of the crew to pursue his own scientific ambitions. Along the way, they make new enemies and clash with old familiar ones, as they uncover the mystery behind Destiny's true purpose.

- This is the fourth (third official) series in the Stargate franchise. The other 3 being: Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Infinity (This is not a sanctioned series according to the creators and producers of the Stargate franchise), and Stargate: Atlantis.

David Blue was not just a casual "Stargate" fan, but had watched every episode of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis before pre-production on this show even began. He says that being part of 'Universe' "brings pride in being a part of it but also immense responsibility in every scene'. Brad Wright joked to a audience at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con "With David we got not only an actor, but a technical adviser for our own show".

Jamil Walker Smith and Elyse Levesque were both featured guests at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con for the panel on the premiere of "Stargate Universe". When they went to the "Stargate" booth they were approached by the zealous employee working it who asked them if they'd like to enter a drawing to win a walk-on role in the show.

Sergeant Greer's Uniform and collar insignia mark him as a Marine Master Sergeant. This would make him an E-8 and a very senior and experienced enlisted man.
