At night and on weekends, four men in a suburban garage have built a cottage industry of error-checking devices. But, they know that there is something more. There is some idea, some mechanism, some accidental side effect that is standing between them and a pure leap of innovation. And so, through trial and error they are building the device that is missing most. However, two of these men find the device and immediately realize that it is too valuable to market. The limit of their trust in each other is strained when they are faced with the question, If you always want what you can't have, what do you want when you can have anything?

Movie Quote(s):
- Aaron: Are you hungry? I haven't eaten since later this afternoon.
-
Aaron: You got anything to eat? I haven't eaten anything since later this afternoon.
-
Abe: Aaron, I can imagine no way in which this thing could be considered anywhere remotely close to safe. All I know is I spent six hours in there and I'm still alive... You still want to do it?
-
Kara: Did you call pest control? Aaron: Babe, they're birds. You don't want a bunch of dead baby birds up there, do you? Kara: They don't sound like birds. Aaron: [to Abe] She thinks there are rats in the attic.
-
Abe: I just want you to see it the way I saw it. Aaron: I am trying, okay, I really am here. Abe: Look, everything we're putting into that box becomes ungrounded, and I don't mean grounded like to the earth, I mean, not tethered. I mean, we're blocking whatever keeps it moving forward and so they flip-flop. Inside the box it's like a street, both ends are cul-de-sacs. I mean, this isn't frame dragging or wormhole magic this is basic mechanics and heat 101. Aaron: This is *not* mechanics and heat.
Movie Trivia:
- There was a scene later cut out portraying Aaron as a diabetic. The shot showed him giving himself an insulin injection.
-
Shane Carruth stated that at most an 80 minute could be made from the footage (the film was 78 minutes). He stated that the shooting ratio was 2:1.
-
In the scene in which Abe-2 knocks out Abe-1 with nitrous oxide, the container he's holding is actually a rice cooker. Also, we see sleeping Abe's profile, but not standing Abe, because the latter was Shane Carruth standing in for David Sullivan.
-
The budget for the entire film was around $7000. Most of the money was spent on film stock.
-
The device in the movie is a person-sized, metal box that hums. One scene features Abe and Aaron standing behind some trees, as they watch themselves enter a U-Haul Storage facility. This scene was filmed in Carrollton, TX (a suburb of Dallas, TX), and in 2005 these trees were cleared to build a Hummer dealership.
