Movie Quote(s):
- Mary Reilly: He said you had an illness. What kind of an illness? Dr. Henry Jekyll: You might call it a fracture in my soul. Something... which left me with a taste for oblivion.
-
Mr. Edward Hyde: I am sorry. I thought you were planning to stay a while. But perhaps my sense of smell deceives me.
-
Mr. Edward Hyde: I am the bandit. He is merely the cave in which I shelter.
-
Mr. Edward Hyde: I always knew you'd be the death of us.
-
Dr. Henry Jekyll: It was the only way he could devise to set you free. It was inevitable from the moment I found how to achieve what I'd always wanted... To be the knife as well as the wound. Would you have ever forgiven me? I wanted the night... you see... and here it is...
Movie Trivia:
- John Malkovich, who plays Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, previously appeared in The Object of Beauty (1991), in which his character complains of too many film adaptations of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
-
After the production was given the green light, Tim Burton was set to direct this but, after receiving the script for Ed Wood (1994), he chose to direct that instead.
-
Although the crew originally shot an ending similar to the book's (an anticlimax in which Jekyll dies and Mary lies beside him), there were no fewer than 25 rewrites. In winter 1995, months after Mary Reilly's production team had disbanded, the producers called back the stars to shoot three alternative endings. For one of them, Glenn Close was flown back to London on the Concorde for one day of work.
-
Jack Nicholson was considered to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Emmanuelle Seigner was considered to play the title role and Roman Polanski was originally directing, but the package fell apart.
-
Julia Roberts beat Uma Thurman to the lead role, for a $10 million paycheck.
