A space ship carrying four scientists and a wisecracking news reporter lands on the planet Mars and discovers signs of an underground civilization. They are greeted by its apparently friendly population and made to feel welcome while they repair their ship for the voyage home. Dr. Jim Barker, the expedition's leader, falls in love with the beautiful Alita, daughter of Tillamar, an influential member of the Martian governing council and learns that Ikron, the council's militant leader, plans on using the repaired ship to invade the Earth. Natural resources on Mars are dwindling, and unless the Martians can recolonize on Earth, their civilization is doomed. Barker hides his knowledge of the council's plans tries to complete the repair work ahead of schedule, so their party, along with Alia, can return to Earth without betraying their plans to Ikron.

- Professor Jackson: I'm considered a scholar, but unfortunately that hasn't made me rich.
-
Steve Abbott: Dr. Lane, I once heard of a man who climbed a higher mountain than anyone else alive, but he was never able to get down again. What's left of him is still up there. Dr. Lane: The point is, Steve, he made it.
-
Steve Abbott: [looking at the Earth through the port hole of the spaceship] Ah, the Earth seems so big when you're on it... from out here so small and nothing. It's like closing your eyes in the dark and suddenly you're alone with your soul.
-
Dr. Jim Barker: I think maybe we'll play a little bridge. Dr. Lane: Bridge? If you introduce that game on this planet, people will never forgive you.
-
Steve Abbott: [playing solitaire] How many years you've been in love with him? Carol Stafford: [tearfully] Three. Steve Abbott: How many tears do you think it'll take to wash out three years.
Movie Trivia:

-
The suits that the Martians wear were leftovers from Destination Moon (1950).
-
The interior of the spaceship is the same one used for Rocketship X-M (1950).
-
According to star Cameron Mitchell, the entire film was shot in 5 days.
-
In the scene where the reporter and one of the professors go back to check for damage. The round red object he opens up is a complete (minus 2 machine guns) belly ball turret for a B-17 bomber from World War II. It is minus it's revolving and raising and lowering mechanisms.
