Movie Trivia:
- Was shot over a year from 2004 to 2005, in the spare time of the unpaid cast and crew who were mostly friends who grew up in Blacksburg, VA or met as students at Virginia Tech. Post-production lasted so long that Jack Bennett and F.M. Turner started, finished and released an entire other feature film (River of Dread) during the editing of BEAST.
-
Shooting began with only F.M Turner in the cast. All other parts were cast during the production.
-
F.M. Turner shot his scenes solely on the weekends he could travel from his home in Richmond, VA to the location in Blacksburg, VA. His availability became so spread out that production always lost a day to re-establishing the context of his scenes, watching the previously shot footage, and "adjusting Turner's beard continuity."
-
When Leon leads Elizabeth through the dark, actress Carrie Thomas was recorded separately, with director Jack Bennett leading her around the post-production facility with a blindfold on. Much of her dialogue in the scene are out-of-character reactions to Bennett letting her bump into things.
-
No crew was available for the scene in which The Old Man walks through the labyrinth and steps over the shaking chain. With no other scene to shoot and desperate for one other person to help, Turner and Bennett enlisted William Morva, their friend from Blacksburg, who was hanging out in a coffee-shop near the filming location at the Virginia Tech Student Center. Morva had been banned from campus by the police, allegedly for trespassing in restricted areas, but the filmmakers felt him to be harmless and sneaked him onto the location. In the completed scene, it is Morva who is standing off-screen and shaking the chain (he also shows up in silhouette near the end of the film). A year later, William Morva was arrested for an attempted armed robbery, and escaped from jail by killing a security guard and a police officer (he has since been re-captured and convicted of murder). His escape attempt resulted in a lock-down of the Virginia Tech campus.
