A Study In Terror (1965) Jack the Ripper is on the loose killing prostitutes in London's Whitechapel district and Sherlock Holmes, assisted by his friend Dr. Watson, is on the case. From the pathologist's findings. Holmes concludes that the man had some medical training, most likely as a surgeon. Various clues lead him to the son of an aristocrat who was studying medicine but has since vanished since marrying a prostitute. His investigation leads him to a local street mission for the poor where Dr. Murray, an avowed socialist who works part-time as a police surgeon, does his best to provide the basic necessities of life to London's poor and destitute. Holmes soon has a short list of possible suspects including Dr. Murray, his assistant Sally young and Max Steiner, a pub owner and pimp. The inevitable final confrontation reveals the identity of the killer.

Movie Quote(s):
  • Sherlock Holmes: My dear Mycroft, this is a surprise! Watson, some sherry... Is this a social call? Mycroft Holmes: Yes, yes, oh yes, purely social. [pause] Mycroft Holmes: How are you? Sherlock Holmes: Very well. [pause] Sherlock Holmes: Well, now that the social call is over, hadn't we better get down to business?
  • Mycroft Holmes: For Heaven's sake, stop sawing away on that infernal instrument! It was a sad day when Mother gave it to you, a sad day for her, a sad day for you, a sad day for us all... What I cannot understand is why, since you've had that violin with you so long, you never learned to play!
  • Annie Chapman: Chunky? Chunky: Yes, Annie? Annie Chapman: You can have it for nothing if you want to, I'm feeling real lonely tonight, Chunky. Chunky: Oh, no thanks, love, I'm too busy, honest. Annie Chapman: Oh.
  • Duke of Shires: Where did you get this case? Sherlock Holmes: I believe it to have come from a White Chapel pawn shop, sir. Duke of Shires: A Pawn shop. No more than I predicted for him... Sherlock Holmes: For whom, sir? Duke of Shires: My eldest son, Michael. Sherlock Holmes: Do you know of his present address? Duke of Shires: He is dead. Sherlock Holmes: Oh, of what accident or sickness, your grace? Duke of Shires: Disobedience. From the day he left this house against my wishes, he has been dead, sir. Sherlock Holmes: You mean disowned, your grace.
  • Sherlock Holmes: Come, Mister Beck, your face reacts faster than your brain. You remember very well...
Movie Trivia:
  • The closing Baker Street sequence alludes to Conan Doyle's 1892 short story "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle."
  • John Neville reprised the rôle of Holmes on Broadway in the 1970s.
  • Thorley Walters was offered Dr.Watson.
  • Frank Finlay also plays Inspector Lestrade in Murder by Decree (1979), another film that pits Sherlock Holmes against Jack the Ripper. Anthony Quayle appears in both movies as well, in different roles.
  • SPOILER: John Fraser has starring billing in the main titles but does not turn up till 24 minutes in, meaning his his role is an expanded cameo rather than a leading role.
