Plot Description:
A group of teens leave a party, and start driving home. One of the teens is drinking, so when they run over a man near a fishing dock they decide their lives will be ruined if they confess to the crime. So, they decide to throw the dead body into the water. A year or so later, they start getting letters saying "I know what you did last summer". Afraid of being caught by the police, they attempt to track down the source of the letters, but are horrified when they find out the source is the man that they thought was dead.

Movie Trivia
- The group goes to "Dawson's Beach." This is a reference to _Dawson's Creek (1988)_ also written by Kevin Williamson.
Movie Mistakes
- Continuity: Barry's undershirt.
- Errors in geography: Although the action takes place on the east coast of the USA in North Carolina, at the very beginning of the movie we see the sun setting over the ocean.
- Factual Errors: When Ben makes the boat go faster, Julie falls forward when she should fall back.
- Continuity: When Helen is in the police car with the officer they see someone ahead. The officer gets out to tell him to move; behind him you can see that the police car is empty even though Helen is in it.
- Factual Errors: Even if he's alive, which he shouldn't be, Ben should be unable to move after getting hit by the car.
- Factual Errors: When Ben is hit by the car, he gets knocked into Barry, who gets bent backwards but is totally uninjured.
- Plot holes: How was Ben able to get into Helen's house and hide with no one noticing?
- Plot holes: How did Ben kill Barry and dispose of his corpse with no one noticing?
- Plot holes: How did Ben get Max's corpse into and out of the trunk of Julie's car with no one noticing?
- Plot holes: How did Ben know that Helen would be taken home in a police car?
- Continuity: When Ray is dragged behind the boat, he loses his jeans. When he climbs aboard, he has his jeans on again.
- Continuity: When the body is found in the trunk, its throat is clearly intact, contradicting its gruesome demise.
- Continuity: When the final struggle begins, the action is set on a boat called "Billy Blue". As the fight ends, the boat name "Sweet Susie" can be seen on the back of the boat.
- Revealing mistakes: When Julie and Helen are using a laptop to search for articles on the Internet, the IBM Thinkpad has a power cable but no network or modem cable (the movie pre-dates commonplace wireless networking).
