Movie Trivia:
  • After the rights to The Green Hornet property were purchased by Miramax in 2001, Kevin Smith was attached to write and direct the film in 2004, with Jake Gyllenhaal set to star alongside a female Kato. However, Smith pulled out of directing due to an insecurity of directing something with such a larger budget than he was used to. He stayed on as writer and wrote two drafts, but with no further progress with the script, the rights were let go and purchased by Columbia Pictures. Then, coincidentally, his Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) star, Seth Rogen, became attached to star and write the screenplay. Smith's screenplay, however, would resurface later in the form of a comic book miniseries.
  • Seth Rogen shed 30 pounds to play the titular role.
  • In late 2008, Stephen Chow was set to direct and co-star as Kato. However, creative differences prevented him from doing so although, for a while, it seemed he was still set to play Kato when Michel Gondry became attached. Seth Rogen stated the reason for Chow's departure was that the director wanted Kato to implant Britt with a microchip and control him with a joystick, something Rogen wasn't keen on.
  • The film's release date was originally the day that an adaptation of another emerald hero was to be released, Green Lantern (2011).
  • Nicolas Cage was initially cast as Chudnofsky, but dropped out. He intended to play the role with a Jamaican accent, much to director Michel Gondry's dismay.
  • 'The Green Hornet' was originally a radio show, first broadcast in 1936 and running to 1952. Although there were two serials in the 1940s (13 and 15 chapters, respectively), the last six chapters of the first one re-edited into a 100-minute feature and several episodes of the 1966 TV series were edited together into a pair of 90-minute films, this is the first original feature-length Hollywood treatment of the costumed hero.
  • James Wan was considered to direct before Michel Gondry came aboard.
  • A poster for The Lone Ranger can be seen in Britt Reid's room. In the original radio program, Reid was the The Lone Ranger's grandnephew. His father rode with The Lone Ranger on some of his adventures and they shared the family name of Reid. Both radio programs were created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker.
  • Abbie Cornish was in early talks to play Lenore.
  • Jay Chou improvised the "I don't want to touch you" line seen in the trailer.
  • Asian pop star Jay Chou got the role of Kato after a video conference with Seth Rogen was set up. He was invited to do a screen test - the filmmakers did not know he was a famous singer in Asia up until the last moments.
  • One of the drawings in Kato's sketchbook is of Bruce Lee, who played Kato in the 1966 TV series.
  • George Clooney, Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Wahlberg and Vince Vaughn were previously considered to play the lead role.
  • Jet Li had a pay-or-play deal for the role of Kato back when the Weinsteins had the rights.
  • Michel Gondry was initially set to direct the film for Universal Pictures back in 1997, for what was to be his directorial debut. The script was written by Edward Neumeier and featured a villain who ate human hearts. Gondry initially wanted Vince Vaughn for the lead, but the parts of Britt and Kato were offered to Mark Wahlberg and Jason Scott Lee.
  • The reference to Twilight (2008/I) is changed in international versions of the film (whether dubbed or subtitled) so that the reference makes sense in context. For example in France the characters reference Sunset Blvd. (1950) instead.
  • Eddie Murphy lobbied heavily for the part of Britt Reid back in 1992.
  • George Clooney was cast as Britt Reid back in the mid-nineties but dropped out to star in The Peacemaker (1997).
  • 29 copies of the Black Beauty were made from scrounged 1964, 1965, and 1966 Chrysler Imperials, many of which were rusted out and had to be rebuilt. Only three survived production intact.
  • The exterior of the Daily Sentinel building is the Creative Artists Agency building in Century City.
  • During the initial confrontation outside the hibachi restaurant, Kato punches a henchman through a window using a very fast short punch. This is an homage to Bruce Lee's famous "one-inch punch", which was said to be able to knock a person off their feet with a strike that only moved one inch.
  • In Danny 'Crystal' Cleer's office, a TV on the wall is playing live footage of the heavy metal band Anvil.
  • The Gonpachi is an actual restaurant but it is located in Roppongi, Tokyo.
